Mafwe Museum at new location

Mafwe Museum at new location

The Living Museum of the Mafwe has moved. In mid-February 2019, we were able to carry out the long-awaited relocation of the Living Museum of the Mafwe.

Not only is the new place easier to find and has fantastic views of the Kwando flood plains, it also offers the possibility of a wider range of activities and programs.

Directions

The directions to the new venue have changed only slightly. From Kongola you drive north towards Zambia on the tarred road (D3502). Follow the signs to the Mafwe Museum and after about 17 km you will find the museum clearly visible on the left side directly next to the road.

Background

Reason for the relocation of the museum were disputes regarding the land use at the original location under the big Baobab trees in Singalamwe. The traditional leader of the Mafwe in this region (Induna) was not able to resolve the internal dispute over the use of land. On the contrary he made matters worse by demanding high payments for land use. The authority in charge, which was to regulate land use since the beginning of 2008, has not been able to issue an official leasehold.

The new site belongs to the Madima family, who is heavily involved in the Mafwe Living Museum, and has owned the land for generations, thus providing planning security and a safe home for the Mafwe Museum.
