Statement on the incident at the Ju/'Hoansi Living Museum: Alleged photographing of naked underage girls and boys by a tourist
The Living Culture Foundation Namibia (LCFN), representative of the seven official Living Museums in Namibia, was informed on Sunday by the manager of the Living Museum in Grashoek about the incident in which a visitor to the Ju/'Hoansi Living Museum in Grashoek allegedly took nude photographs of minors.
The police was immediately informed and took the tourist into custody. Several nude photographs of underage boys and girls were found on his camera. Media reports also indicate that the tourist allegedly touched the minors inappropriately.
This act not only clearly violates Namibian and international law, but also violates the dignity and privacy of minors from the San community, an indigenous culture that deserves special protection.
As an organization committed to cultural preservation and the empowerment of minorities, we strongly condemn such disrespectful and dehumanizing acts. The protection of children and the ethical and respectful treatment of indigenous communities are our irrevocable priorities.
