The Cultural Network

Successful work in Namibia

The active members of the Living Culture Foundation Namibia, which were in Namibia for the past six months have been very successful in finding new partners for the cultural network. Presently six new projects are in the making:

The Living Museum of the Mafwe

The currently developing Living Museum of the Mafwe in the Caprivi Strip in the north of Namibia is making good progress. By own initiative the hard working project group under the management of Elizabeth Madima has errected the complete infrastructure of an old, traditional Mafwe Village and it seems as if Namibia’s second Living Museum will come into existence at the beginning of 2008. The Mafwe will only need some help in completing an exiting program for their museum. Nicolaas Kirchner and Sonja Iwanek-Kirchner from the LCFN have recently been up at Singalamwe to discuss possible points of program with the Mafwe.  On 08.12.2007 the LCFN will meet with the project group to have a final rehearsal where the quality and authenticity of the representation of the old Mafwe culture will be examined.

The development of a Damara Museum

Hans a highly motivated Damara, who lives in close vicinity to the well know rock engravings at Twyfelfontein (declared World Heritage Site in 2007), is presently busy building a museum. His aim is to present the almost forgotten and lost culture of his ancestors. He has been working on the establishment of a museum for a couple of years already and has recently heard of the LCFN and contacted us immediately. We are happy to be able to support him and to be given the chance to maybe preserve important parts of the Damara culture.  LCFN member Kathrin Gebhardt has met with Hans and members of the community in „Damaraland“ to explain and discuss the concept of the Living Museums and to secure some support for Hans within the community. We hope that the community will realise the opportunities given by a Living Museum in the area and that the museum can officially open next year!!

Some other projects of the cultural network are still at the very beginning of their development:

1. The LCFN Team is currently working with some Kavango people living in Katutura to start a traditional sing and dance group.

2. Werner Pfeifer and Freca Menzel are busy writing a concept for the development of a training centre with the Mafwe in the Caprivi Strip.

3. Mr. Andersson from southern Namibia is working with LCFN on a concept to present the history of his family, which originated from a marriage between a Swedish man and a Nama women.

4. Furthermore we are busy with developing a Kavango Living Museum close to Rundu in nothern Namibia at the Okavango River. In this case the museum will present the exciting culture of the Kavango and Lutjazi.

Establishment of the partner association LCN e.V.

On 28.07.2007 we established the Living Culture Namibia e.V. (LCN e.V.) in Tangermünde. The LCN association is the German partner of the Living Culture Foundation Namibia and its Board of Directors is Sebastian Dürrschmidt and Dr. Ralf Kühn. One of its objectives is to find support in Germany for its Namibian partner organisation.  This is done through public relations, presentations and the collection of donations, etc. The LCN e.V. also takes active part in the decision making process concerning projects in Namibia.

An outlook on 2008

While the LCN e.V. will be busy with public relations and the collections of donations in Germany, the LCFN in Namibia will concentrate on the initiation of new projects for the cultural network and the presentation and marketing of running projects..

In 2008 a San pictorial will be developed to grant insight into the world of Namibias first Living Museum. This pictorial will illustrate the live of contrasts of Ju/’Hoansi Bushmen in Namibia, depicting the opportunities and problems facing this language group.

The LCFN will for the first time have a photo competition in spring 2008.  The best pictures regarding the topic „Cultures in Namibia“ will be published on our website. The winner will be rewarded with a set of complete and authentic hunting gear of the Bushmen.
